The SD10 features a 16x optical zoom. You can zoom close to catch dynamic shots of distant objects. And because the zoom is optical, there's limited image degradation. Also, Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. helps prevent blurring - typically a big concern when shooting with a zoom. This combination of optical zoom and Advanced O.I.S. gives you the ability to take fantastic zoom shots.Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. helps suppress the effects of hand-shake as you shoot, for both motion and still images. This system uses gyro-sensors to detect even tiny amounts of hand-shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts the optical axis to compensate - all at an astounding 4,000 times per second. Because the system is optical, there's only minimal loss of image quality even when viewed on a large-screen TV. In addition, to shoot high-resolution still images, the normal O.I.S. mode 1 is joined by an O.I.S. mode 2, which has a higher stabilization capability. The O.I.S. corrective lens shifts and stabilizes the image the instant that the shutter button is pressed, to enable greater precision in stabilization. You get all the beauty and minimal blurring. There's nothing more disappointing than shooting an once-in-a-lifetime event on video, only to discover that the images are blurry or poorly exposed because of backlighting. Panasonic's iA helps avoid problems in difficult shooting situations by automatically making the optimal camera settings and activating certain functions. For example, iA includes AF tracking, a function that "locks" on and follows a subject as it moves, so images are sharply focused and properly exposed. This technology is a huge help for everyone.

 "Panasonic HDC-SD10K SD Camcorder" 2009-12-26
By Raymond Dean (Redding, CA United States)
This is a great little camera, excellent video and photos outdoor and indoor...only used it for one day but so far, I'm satisfied with this camera. So simple to operate, didn't need to read the manual to create movies, photos and playback on HD TV. Perhaps I'm not as critical as some of the reviewers but I simply cannot find anything wrong with this camera, I think it's one of the best in this price range.

"Great Outdoors - Poor Inside" 2009-12-24
By cz9h3d (Michigan)
With a very low price prior to the holidays, and a new i7 iMac, I thought I'd finally jump on the HD camcorder wagon. I've had miniDV camcorders for the last 11 years. My last (Canon Optura Pi) was selected after careful research with a high priority on quality footage indoors in the evening - the achilles heel of digital camcorders. I own 3 Panasonic still digital cameras, so I admit to having a soft spot for the brand.

Anyways, the SD10 was a great price, a beautiful little form factor, and shot beautiful video outside during the day. My experience at night indoors (with all lights on) showed the camera to do a poor job. We're not just talking about noise, but blockiness too. It was totally unwatchable. I also shot some additional indoor footage during the day - a large indoor building with lots of light - very watchable but noticeable grain. Note that footage was viewed directly on a HD Television using the HDMI connection - on the viewfinder you might think the footage was fine.

The reviews were mixed - mainly regarding comments on indoor usage - but I thought I'd take a chance. Alas the camera went back, and I replaced it with a Sanyo FH1aSanyo VPC-FH1A Full HD Video and 8 MP Digital Photos (Black) (also from Amazon). Its indoor performance is excellent!

This is my first HD video camera. The quality of the video is excellent when viewed on my laptop and TV. What I don't like, and the reason I am returning it, is because when I tried to burn a DVD it took 2 hours and 47 minutes to burn 20% of the 15 min of video that I recorded.

 "Good starter HD cam" 2009-12-23
By William (Atlanta)
Easy to use. Light weight. Battery life could be longer. Picture quality in low light settings could be better. Camcorder light could be better.

All in all, I am extremly happy with our purchase. We first used it for family videos during the weekend of our wedding. The video is absolutely excellent in ideal light settings. Low light noise is noticeable, however.

For the most part you can just press record and go. I have yet to dable in the more advanced features, which must mean the standard setup works well.

Good starter HD cam for the price. Would reccomend.

 "Video quality is awful" 2009-12-21
By Michael P. Retzak (Indianapolis, IN United States)
I was looking at getting a Flip MinoHD but saw this for less than $100 more so I decided to take the plunge. Boy, was that a mistake. Video quality is terrible in any but the brightest of lighting conditions, and even then it's not great. I am returning this camcorder, and have already replaced it with the latest generation of the Flip. What a difference. True, you lose quite a few features with the flip, but to me, the video quality is most important, and it emerges as the hands down winner between the two. Save your money and go with the flip, or spend more and get a proper HD camcorder from Canon or a higher end Panasonic.
