 "sony handy cam" 2009-12-26

Item was as described, although I was told that the cord included would work in spite of the correct cord was not. The ad did say the correct cord was not included and it was a quick fix. I would do business with this seller again, they were honest and tried to help me out. I am very very pleased with the item and so is the church that it was given to. Thank you so much

"Great camcorder that uses DV tapes for recording" 2009-10-26
By Andy Schack (n FL)
I wanted an HD camcorder but was turned off by the units that used a hd for storing the video, this unit took care of that. It uses the regular DV tapes you can buy just about anywhere. My experience with the battery has been very good but it wouldn't hurt to buy an extra. Video quality is great and playback is a snap since it has an hdmi output. The video quality DOES degrade when in a low-light situation. A good "for instance" would be when we went to the aquarium in Gatlinburg, the video of the fish was very sharp but when I panned to my family (who was lit only by the light from the tank) the video got grainy. The built-in flash is EXTREMELY strong. Only problem I've had with the camera part is that it doesn't always focus as fast as I'm used to so give it a second or two. I've transfered some video to my Sony VRDMC5 via the dv output and the quality is pretty good though down-converted. Price around...got mine for $399.

"Good camera but way over-priced and notoriously terrible customer service" 2009-04-02
By P. Horne (Los Angeles, CA USA)
This was a great unit when it came out, but now it's just WAY over-priced.

Mine just died after 2 years, and I'd only used it about 15-20 times. Sony wants me to pay more than $500 for a flat-fee repair. Unbelievable.

Do a search online -- the error message I got was really common, and MANY people got the same $500 assessment.

I'll never buy Sony again.

 "HI DEF SONY CAMCORDER" 2008-05-13
By Robert Robert
I love this camcorder. I used in during my vacation in Hawaii. I still can't believe how amazing it looks on the screen. Most of my guests who started watching the video thought that we were watching a discovery channel broadcast. It works it's best outside especially with great lighting. Lighting really is the key. The more the light, the better the image. I just use the component video cables on my HDTV LCD. I'd recommend it to anyone who's really into image quality.

 "Why I Love My Sony HDR-XR500" 2009-11-07
By David Saddler (Chester, PA)
Sony's HDR-XR500 is truly a great handycam! The high definition videos that I get with this camera are awesome! I have uploaded quite a few of them to Youtube and they look great!

But I did have a problem with some of the videos I took. Once in a while, I have a problem with uploading one of my high definition videos to Youtube. What happens is I complete the upload process, but the video has a lot of break-up. But the audio still sounds great. I did contact Sony via their on-line tech support and they said that it was not a problem with the camera. They said that as long as I was able to view the videos from the camera and burn them to disc, it was a problem with Youtube and not the HDR-XR500. They also said that it was possible that when I copied the videos to my computer, my computer may have corrupted the videos. But that is probably not true. I tried to upload the same problem videos from my camera to Youtube using another computer and I had the same bad results. But I did get Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro video editing software and used that to fix the problem videos. But, the amount of time it takes the Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro to render a high definition video file is ridiculous! I edited a 10 minute video by adding music to the soundtrack, and it took the software nearly 5 hours to render a hi def .wmv file! Whoa!

But the camera itself is a very good camera. It has great low light capability and it has great anti-vibration capability that is very noticeable when the zoom is all the way out.

 "Great Camera !!!" 2008-08-19
By Florida Joe
I've owned this camera for some time now and have found it to be an outstanding camera in every way. I have not written a review on it until now. Yesterday I fell into a stream in the Great Smokey Mountains while filming grandchildren. Need I say I thought it was "history" for the camera. To make a long story short, in between a few emails to Canon's very good custmer support, I found a way to return the camera for possible repair when I returned home. In the meantime, the Canon slowly dryed out as functions became normal. Now, about 24 hours after my unscheduled swim, the camera still has a bit of a problem with the LCD monitor but it is back up and working! Now your experience might be different and maybe I am just a lucky guy, but I cannot say enough good about this camera. It is fantastic! It is small enough to carry in your pocket. Had I carried another larger camera on a recent trip to Egypt I would never have taken it along for a ride on a camel. The Canon made the trip and we have some super shots of the pyramids from aloft the camel!

One last point. Some may have wondered about compatibility with the Apple operating system. (The above narrative describing this camera mentions Windows but not Apple.) I have found no problem whatsover transferring footage from the Canon to my Apple G4 via the firewire connection.

"Proprietary formatting makes this worthless!" 2010-01-05
By M. Jennings (Concord, CA USA)
In this day and age, when everyone (except Sony, of course) is moving toward universal standards, I am disgusted to find Sony's camera produces video based on a proprietary formatting. In order to retrieve the video, you must use THEIR software... which SURPRISE!... is only provided in a Windows format. Therefore, as a Mac user I am unable to download the videos to my computer for movie creation. Sure... I can purchase "Parallels" and "windows" for a sum of about $200 more, so I can install their software, but why should I have to install that ridiculous operating system? And there are some extremely contrived work-around processes for me to get the video moved from one format to another, but I have yet to find one that actually works. If you are a Mac user.... DO NOT buy this camera; it's not worth the hassle!

"CMOS Sensor Not Good on Camera" 2009-10-08
By Sharon Warren
I had the camera for about 6 months of it working excellent. The quality is good, the navigation is good, and the touch focus was especially good. But after about 6 months of having the camera, the CMOS sensor started to cause the camera to have a distorted image. It was as if it had a wavy or shaky image. And it was very noticeable. It does not stay, but the only way to make it stop is by letting the camera rest. At first this only happened occasionally. But now, after dealing with it for about 4 months, it happens all the time, after only using for about 5 minutes. It is very time consuming and I am planning to get a new camera.

Once again, the camera does the job with excellent quality. But with the distorted quality, it takes the job forever.

 "Beware using indoors" 2009-11-29
By David A. Dirnberger (Sterling Heights, MI USA)
I purchased this camera after reading all the great reviews online. Yes, the software that comes with the camera is not very good like everyone says, but most "included" software isn't very good anyways. What I was absolutely shocked was how horrible the video shot indoors was. Now I am using the term "indoor" and not "low light" because for me there is a difference. To me, low light is when the indoor lights are dim and someone is about to blow out candles, not indoors with every single light in a room on. This camera, even with a room lit up brightly, takes near unviewable videos. I have an older Panasonic still camera with a video function that takes much better indoor video than this camera. I went back and re-read the reviews, several other reviews do mention "low light" conditions as being a problem, but I never dreamed that meant a brightly lit indoor room. The final straw was a video I shot, during the day, next to my open doorwall inside my kitchen: horrible, grainy video. If you intend to use this camera indoors at all, be very careful before you buy.

 "Size Matters" 2009-11-19
By Mary Santos (Houston, Texas)
This camcorder is so small and I love it for that reason alone. Its tiny size makes it easy to fit in your purse or briefcase. The only downfall is that the small size can make it quite difficult to hold the camera steady.

I find the outdoor quality of filming far superior to indoor quality. It must be something to do with the amount of light available because the indoor video does tend to be a bit grainier and this is more obvious with less and less lighting. If indoor filming is your thing, I would not recommend this camcorder to you.

When filming outdoors, the quality is top notch. Intricate details in moving images from a home camcorder always seemed unimaginable, but you can make out these details with this camcorder, although I've found it necessary to use a tripod to eliminate my shaky hands and in such crisp images, shaky hands are painfully noticeable.

The "laser" touch menus are easy to operate, but there are so many options, it will take you a long time to become familiar with them and some of the options aren't easy to understand and caused me a great deal of frustration.

I don't feel the still image quality is as good as it could be. I find myself wondering when these camcorders will truly be all-in-one? This still requires me to lug my point and shoot digital camera around.

I love the use of memory cards. I'm glad tapes are officially on their way out. The cards make this really easy to hook right up to the computer.

Battery life is fair. Mine lasts anywhere from around 2 hours - 3 hours depending on outdoor temperature.

If you want to film amazing outdoor videos, particularly majestic landscape/wildlife movies, you will love this camcorder, but if you are looking for a camcorder purely for home videos (which would include a lot of indoor filming) you should try a different camcorder.

 "Great Secind Unit Camera" 2009-11-02
By Compucat (Western, NY)
This camcorder is a great second unit camera.

The colors are spot on.

20X Zoom is fantastic.

Face detection works.

The digital stabilization is outstanding.

Using 2 sdhc cards that switch from one to the

other automatically is pure genius.

I use older AVCHD canon's for my work and love using this camera

to cover some of Canon's deficiencies i.e.

20X Zoom (Canon's have 10 and 12X) I hate using

tele lenses because of the vignetting and other

problems.

Th digital stabilizion is amazing and better

on the move than my Canon's with their optical.

A benefit is the ability to mount this tiny camera

on a moving vehicle (or RC helicopter)

with digital stabilization it works great while

optical image stabilization gets screwed up.

The size enables you to stick it somewhere

and leave it or get a cheap housing for underwater

stuff.

The size and instant on also make it a great grab and go

- no fuss camera (especially with the face detection).

This camcorder is exactly what I needed to augment my

canons. It's perfect for my uses.

I also use the cellboost irecharge batteries that last

longer than the 815 series batteries and are less expensive.

(provide a nice camera grip too).

Notes on other reviews.

Stabilization is great but when zooming - use

a tripod, monopod, or brace yourself against something

especially in hi definition where everything

is magnified many fold.

This is an outstanding value for the price

and is highly recommended.

"Excellent HD Camcorder With a Few Caveats" 2009-10-13
By E. Qaisar (New York, NY)
I got this from a large discount club whose name starts with a 'C'. I paid $399.99 + $28 sales tax for a special bundle that included a free 4GB class 6 card and a free carrying case as well. My review is based keeping in mind this price point. If you can get this camcorder for under $450, it is worth it. Otherwise look at other models/manufacturers.

Now on to the review...

First impressions: This camcorder is tiny. Coming from a Sony Digital 8 camcorder, it seemed to be real small to me. The ergonomics are ok though and I did not have any major issues with accessing any of the features or usage. I did have a hard time initially where I was pressing the menu items on the LCD screen itself, not realizing that you need to scroll on the 'laser touch' bar on the side of the LCD screen to select a menu item and then press the OK button to activate it.

Build quality: 3.5/5. No major complaints, though I would have liked to see more metal and less plastic.

Video quality in clear daylight: 4/5 (Very good). I shot test videos in XP mode which is the 2nd highest quality. Scenes included a farmers market with lots of colors - red tomatoes, yellow flowers, greens, etc and a few minutes of video in a park with lake and trees. Overall very pleased with the results and reds and yellows really came out nice and brilliant. The water on the lake came out nice and blue just like I saw it with naked eyes. Direct playback on my 46" Sony Bravia using the supplied component cable resulted in an image that could almost match the HDTV broadcasts. The zoom is quite fast and effective, though note the issue below.

Hint: 1) You need to set the signal format to output 1080i as the factory setting is 480p. Otherwise you will get poor playback quality. 2) While the zoom is great, you will want to invest in a tripod as the small size of the camera means that even small movements at high zoom result in unstable images.

Video quality indoors: 2.5/5 (borderline). A bit disappointing as the indoor video was quite grainy, even though I had some natural light coming in. For my own purpose, I am not too concerned as I have primarily bought this camcorder for outdoor use. If you plan to do a lot indoor shooting (birthday parties, for example), you need to either supplement indoor light or buy another (expensive) camcorder. This camcorder does have a built in light that can be activated, but it does not make a great deal of difference. Again, keep in mind the price point - you need to shell out $700 or more to get a camcorder with decent indoor capability.

Audio quality: 3/5 (Adequate): Human voices were captured quite nicely and the wind cut function worked well. The microphone was sensitive enough to pick up distant music in the park.

Software: 3/5 (Adequate): I had no problems playing videos using Windows Vista Ultimate. Nero Vision was able to recognize the .mts files produced by this camcorder without any issues.

Battery life: 3.5/5 (Fair): No worse than what I have seen with other camcorders. I was able to stretch to almost 100 minutes of combined shooting + playback. For my own use, I do not see a need for an extra battery as I rarely shoot more than 60 minutes of video in one go. I do carry a charger/inverter in my car when going on road trips so I can charge the battery while on road.

Digital still quality: Nothing of note here except to say that you need to get a dedicated still camera if you are serious about photography. For those not so special moments, this camcorder may be used to snap a few pictures.

Manual: This is a bit skimpy and does not cover all of the menus and their uses. I wish JVC would rewrite the manual to include explanations of all the menus and features.

Other thoughts: This camcorder has dual SD card slots which is really useful. The built-in lens cover looks a bit fragile so I suggest a getting a good carrying case.

Bottom line: Nice camcorder for the value conscious customer who realizes that no matter how much you spend, things are going to get obsolete in 1-2 years anyway.

Buy this camera if:

- You shoot primarily outdoors in good daylight

- Need a small and light device with reasonably good video quality

- Can get it for $450 or less

Do not buy this camera if:

- Indoor video quality is of primary concern (spend $800 or more on a much better camcorder in this case)

- Need a bit more crisper HD video - here you need to spend over $1,000 on a camcorder with a bigger sensor.

"Great portable camera. No so great indoors or in low light situations" 2009-12-29
By NYC guy (NYC)
What's the point of having an HD camcorder if you don't use it? This unit is compact enough to carry everywhere so I can capture those random precious moments. Picture quality is sharp and it's a breeze to use. The videos come out amazing on my Sony HDTV. This is coming from someone who isn't exactly technically savvy. Two complaints though - 1) Shoots terribly in low light / indoor situations; & 2) The memory sticks are quite expensive. They use the Sony branded memory which carries a premium.

Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this camera to everyone except the avid videophile professional who is more focused on the technicals rather than having a convenient take anywhere piece of equipment.

I got the TG1, which didn't have GPS. No big deal, but make sure when traveling abroad that the time is set to local, and the TIME ZONE is also. If you plan to download clips consistently, set the time and time zone of your PC the same or times will be translated and confusing. Do the same with your camera and you can intersperse high quality photos with videos.

Buy the case - this was so easy to use with the case and attached strap. It even has a pocket for an extra memory stick. So easy I wore it everywhere and didnt feel encumbered like one of those bigger camcorders.

Turn off the quick-on mode. Sucks up battery like crazy and the difference is just a couple seconds to turn on, but you can get at least an hour of record time instead of 20 minutes or so.

View the enclosed CD video - it really helped me record well.

Get the Sony editing software - free for the first month.

Would give it 5 stars but not very good in low light, and image stabilization could be better. I'm looking for SW that would stabilize the images and any recommendation is welcome.

"convenient and fully compatible with Macintosh OSX" 2009-07-11

This is an extremely convenient, easy to use digital camcorder and camera. It fits very nicely into both my pants pocket and small pockets on skirts, and the controls are very easy to use. It has good zoom control, is easy to switch back and forth between movie and photos, and allows photographing while also filming at the same time (which used to require a high degree of coordination with camera in left hand and video in right).

Best of all, it is fully compatible with Macintosh OSX (at least with iPhoto and iMovie 09), working seamlessly once it is USB connected. This is no thanks to Sony, who had terrible documentation that actually misled me into thinking the video was not compatible and that only photos on the memory stick (which I did not buy) would be compatible. I am very glad I decided to just hook it up anyways, and Mac OS X came through to the rescue!

The GPS tags worked perfectly with iPhoto (you just have to make sure it has found its location before shooting, as the movies and photos taken before this is done remain untagged). While it lacks night vision, it makes up for it with manual focus and automatic optimization of focus and exposure on faces. Recommended for its compact all in one and convenient use.

"If this is what you're looking for it's a great product" 2009-07-06

This is my first video camera. I am no way a video expert. I bought it for the arrival of my first child.

Pros:

Out of the box it is easy to get started. The controls are very intuitive, The 10x optical plus digital zoom give you more zoom than I expected when I purchased it.

I own a new Intel based Mac Book, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to transfer the ACVHD easily to IMovie. It turned out to be incredibly easy and I had no issues with the image stabilization causing distortion.

The TG1 is small and easily portable but the image stabilization really keeps the video from appearing jerky.

Sony packages everything you need: charging adaptor, hdmi cables, usb cables, standard video cables

Cons:

Sony memory stick not industry standard SD. San disk is now making a cheap memory stick knockoff

HD down loads are a bit slow. This is just a function of the amount of information and transitioning to IMovie.

You can hear this funny little noise with the auto focus and zoom on playback if the recording doesn't have much other sound going on. Kind of sounds like Predator, minimal annoyance.

Overall: This thing is awesome, absolutely love it. Not to rat out Amazon but B&H photo has it for $535. 40% off the amazon price.
