I barrowed this camera to help out a friend record at a party and created a DVD of the event for them. To my surprise the video quality was at VHS tape standard. I thought the camera was a High Definition at first but found out later it was not. The logo on the camera HDD is misleading. I own a Canon VIXIA HG20 and the difference between them is night and day. If I were to record in my lowest quality with the Canon HD20 it is still better then the ultra fine mode of this JVC camera. The camera comes with a small light which is absolutely worthless unless you are in a completely dark room. By the way, the camera light does not act as a flash, so if you take still pictures, you better make sure you are in a well lighted area. I guess you get what you pay for, so I am glade I have my Canon HD20. So if you are looking for good digital quality video, your are not going to get it with this camera.

I checked a few stores around town too hold and get afeel for what i wanted in a video camera. I was very pleased with the whole amazon experience, the price was about a $100.00 cheaper than i found elsewhere and the ease of purchasing and sending the product was awesome. If i had to come up with a drawback, there was slight damage to the box due to shipping im sure. other than that totaly awesome.

Even though I haven't done a lot of comparisons, the image quality on this unit seems spectacular for the cost. I bought another battery for it that gives me 5 hours of record time, which is far more than I will ever need at one go, but it's great for vacations in that I don't have to constantly worry about battery life and where to plug in and recharge. Get the big battery!



My main complaint is the navigation on the flip out screen. Its clunky and imprecise. When I'm trying to make adjustments or review footage on the fly, the inputs make it far more complicated than it needs to be. Since I don't do a great deal of fiddling while I'm shooting, it's not a big deal. But I think perhaps I would get more out of any advanced features if the "laser touch" thing worked better. Or, they replaced it with a full touch screen and bigger physical buttons.



If you just want to shoot and get great looking images for not a lot of cash, this would be one to consider.

The Flip Mino HD is an impressive little gadget. Its video quality is far beyond what you would expect from such a tiny device, and its small size and intuitive interface make sure it always claims a space in your pocket. I really can not say enough good things about this product's features.



However, I don't recommend buying one. Just four months after purchasing this camcorder BRAND NEW, it has stopped working entirely. It doesn't turn on, it doesn't show up on my computer, and it certainly doesn't record videos any more.



My camera is in flawless physical condition, so I am lead to believe that the innards of these devices are of very shoddy quality. I have scoured the internet and found many others facing the same situation I am. The manufacturer recommends that we place a paperclip in the reset button, which has not resolved the problem for myself or for thousands of others.



The warranty covers an unacceptable 90 days after purchase. This company must have very little confidence in this product to only offer support for 90(!) days. I doubt they are ever surprised to receive angry phone calls or product reviews.



In short, this is an impressive and fun to use product that unfortunately has a lifespan of about 3 months. For that reason, I do not recommend it.

After an exhaustive search on how to correct this problem I have given up. I found that this is a common problem and Flip has not spent much time trying to resolve this for anyone.

 "Steady shot is overheating causing image to jump" 2009-12-18

I have been using this camera for 2 years now. The steady shot lens overheat frequently and block themselves causing the image to blur (jumping vertically). The footage is useless. It seams the problem happens in most SR models - I found a lot of similar complains not only about SR7. I am not going to risk and buy another model from sony anymore. I do not recommend to buy this camera!

We bought this in summer of 2007 for my first child. Its great value and easy to use. photo quality is so good that we dont use our still digital camera.Recommended for new users like me. The only problem is that we could not figure hoe to run movies on external programs. So you have to install sony software on each new computer. Pictures arelatively easy and dont need sonys software.

I am using this camera, and it is nice. However, my biggest gripe is that it is not Mac compatible. Many creative types use a Mac, which comes with very nice movie software. I have both Macs and PCs, but would have preferred to use my Mac.



Because it wasn't compatible, I purchased Sony's Vegas, but would have been much happier using iMovie.

Sony, getting better all the time: This is not my first video camera, I started about 20 years ago with the Betamovie and with it I've made videos with such good quallity that I didn't change it by the next one, the Video 8 because it still wasn't better until the first Hi8 appeared which was really better than the Video 8 and the Betamovie, after it I've been changing my video cameras each three or four years and once I've tested a Panasonic which wasn't bad but, I've always felt better with Sony, and each time I buy a new one, I find new good surprices, beeing them in the head of those products's tecnology.

The only one thing I would complain about this last one, the HDR-SR7, is not having the red light for the photo camera which you need to get focus in dark.

I think the obvious has been stated.

The camera does a great job with good lighting. Low level lighting is an issue.

I knew that before I bought.

I also knew to have Sony Vegas primed for the AVCHD formatted files.



Playback is difficult on slower processors and editing via a laptop even with core2 duo processors is rough.



I hook the camera up to the TV via the mini hdmi/usb thumb drive via PS3/USB cable to PS3/SD DVD with AVCHD as BR on PS3.



The battery life has been ok for my usage. A backup will be necessary for vacation/long shoots.



Controls and interface are user friendly and the "easy" button is nice for instant settings and shoot.



I am very happy with this camera.

Since I'm a novice photographer, I usually look for less expensive peripherals that get the job done while keeping costs down so I can buy as much equipment as possible. If I decide to get more serious about making videos I'll upgrade later. That said, I purchased the Opteka filter kit based on prior reviews of others. I find them to be solid, far from what I'd consider to be cheap knock-offs, and they appear to perform satisfactorily. A very good buy, in my opinion.

For amateurs who own one of the listed Sony Handycams. These filters are very low cost and are sure to improve your picture taking.



The haze filter reduces haze for sharper landscape images. It also can be left on the camera to cover the lens. This means you don't have to remember to operate the built-in lens cover so the camera is ready to take pictures as soon you turn it on.



The polarizing filter is used to reduces nonmetallic glare. It can also darken the sky, bringing out the beauty of clouds.



The pink-ish filter creates a warmer lighting effect and is especially useful for indoor photography under cold light sources - such as fluorescent lighting.

The uv and polarizer filters worked very well on my recent trip to Kauai. There was minimal glare even through the window of the helecopter and nice saturation of the colors of the ocean, sky, and mountains with the polarizer. Colors with the UV filter were also very nice.
